Individual Therapy

Individual therapy or counseling is an opportunity to take some quiet time to nurture and support yourself. Whether you are haunted by pain from the past, struggling with current relationships, or simply wanting to take a step back to assess where you've come from, where you are and where you are going, individual therapy can give you the structure and support you need to understand the patterns of your life and to make the changes you decide are important to create a life that truly reflects your dreams.

Healing Trauma

Psychological trauma is to the human soul what physical shock is to the body - a natural reaction to pain and injury that we experience as overwhelming. In the normal course of events, just as the body has the capacity to repair and heal itself, so too the mind or psyche is capable of regeneration and healing when given the opportunity to do so. When we are safe and supported upsetting events gradually become distant memories. All too often, however, our souls do not get the opportunity to heal that they need. When this happens the brain's natural healing process is blocked, evoking a host of symptoms including:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • self-defeating behaviors
  • nightmares and trouble sleeping
  • flashbacks
  • loss of appetite or compulsive eating
  • overwhelming anger

Trauma can come from many sources and may be recent or rooted in the distant past. Common sources of trauma include:

  • childhood abuse (physical, verbal and sexual)
  • growing up with parents who are addicted to alcohol, drugs or dysfunctional behaviors such as gambling
  • death or divorce of parents
  • rape or sexual assault
  • domestic Violence
  • being the victim of a crime
  • car accidents
  • combat experiences
  • Surgeries and serious illnesses
  • loss of job or home
  • natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods

Effective treatment for trauma combines accessing already existing skills and strengths, nurturing safety, and a holistic approach to gently revisiting the original source of pain in order to reclaim your original sense of power, safety and strength. For more information please visit::

Nurturing Healthy Relationships - Supportive Therapy for Individuals in Committed Relationships

After the initial excitement of romance fades, the hard work of building healthy relationships begins. In this era of high divorce rates and shifting roles and expectations it is often difficult to know whether the tension or difficulties in our relationships indicate serious problems or are part of the natural progression of a healthy relationship. Individual therapy can help you to clarify your concerns, identify your needs and feelings, learn to express your concerns effectively and to understand and change those behaviors that may be undermining your most cherished dreams. Classes and support groups are available to help you integrate and implement what you are learning through your individual work.

Returning Military Personnel

After the initial relief and joy of returning home, the adjustment to civilian life can sometimes be challenging. Difficult, frightening and painful experiences that you didn't have time to think about while overseas can re-emerge and the memories may be hard to shake. Some veterans find it difficult to share with friends and family what they have been through or to ask for the support and understanding they need. We offer military personnel returning from service overseas a reduced fee structure for their first year of therapy. For more information about discounts for veterans call (215) 699-1238.
